01 · The scientific principle

What is happening?

Silver nitrate may precipitate halides such as chloride. The volume added to the equivalence provides information on their initial quantity.

Mohr, Fajans and Volhard use different locations. The method, pH and interferences must be chosen together; observing a precipitate is not enough to identify a concentration.

02 · Relationships to know

The formulas, with their conditions.

Agâș + Cl⁻ → AgCl(s)

Stoichiometric ratio 1:1.

Use when: Example of chloride titration.

c(Cl⁻) = c(Agâș) × Vₑ / V₀

c: mol/L; Vₑ and V₀ in the same unit.

Use when: Direct titration, corrected blank and absence of interference consuming Agâș.

03 · From laboratory to industry

Where is this principle used?

Food factory

Check the chloride content of a brine.

Water treatment

Measure chlorides using the appropriate method.

What to observe in the experiment

Compare the end of dosing detection according to Mohr, Fajans and Volhard, and note the conditions which change.

This sheet explains the principles and their assumptions. Educational simulation can simplify the process; an industrial model requires suitable data and validation.

Have you understood the essentials?

Only one correct answer per question. Answer all three questions, then view the answer key.

1. The reaction Agâș + Cl⁻ forms

2. The direct Agâș/Cl⁻ assay uses what ratio?
