From nuclear reactor to electricity

Understand the energy conversion chain of a nuclear power plant.

Reading · approximately 4 min2 relationships explainedquiz · 3 questions
01 · The scientific principle

What is happening?

Controlled fission provides heat in the reactor. This heat powers a steam cycle; a turbine drives an alternator which converts mechanical work into electrical energy.

In a pressurized water plant, the primary and secondary circuits have distinct functions and exchange heat in the steam generator. Cooling removes heat that is not converted into electricity.

02 · Relationships to know

The formulas, with their conditions.

η = Pélectrique / Pthermique

Powers in the same unit; η dimensionless.

Use when: Specify gross or net electrical power depending on the balance chosen.

Q̇ = ṁ Δh

Q̇: W; ṁ: kg/s; Δh: J/kg.

Use when: Simplified assessment of an exchanger in steady state, losses neglected.

03 · From laboratory to industry

Where is this principle used?

Nuclear power plant

Produce electricity and manage heat exchanges.

Energy systems engineering

Study turbines, exchangers and energy balances.

What to observe in the experiment

Follow the energy path between reactor, steam generator, turbine and alternator. Distinguish this path from that of each fluid.
