Metallurgical furnace selection and operation

Identify the energy source and the real function of each family of equipment.

Reading · approximately 4 min2 relationships explainedquiz · 3 questions
01 · The scientific principle

What is happening?

A furnace can dry, calcine, roast, melt, or refine a charge. Rotary furnace, fluidized bed, flash fusion, street light, converter, arc and induction have their own exchanges and mechanisms.

A HĂ©roult electric arc furnace must be distinguished from a Hall–HĂ©roult electrolytic tank for aluminium. An equipment name does not imply the same reaction, the same metal, or the same heat source.

02 · Relationships to know

The formulas, with their conditions.

Qchauffage ≈ m c ΔT ; Qfusion ≈ m Lf

m: kg; c: J·kg⁻Âč·K⁻Âč ; Lf: J/kg ; Q: J.

Use when: Simplified estimate to be completed by reactions, gases, losses and changes in properties.

Pélectrique = U I

P: W; U: V; I: A.

Use when: DC relationship; in AC, use the appropriate active power and power factor.

03 · From laboratory to industry

Where is this principle used?

Foundry

Melt and homogenize metallic charges.

sulfide smelter and steel industry

Transform and refine materials with a suitable oven.

What to observe in the experiment

Classify workshop equipment by operation and energy: heat of reaction, combustion, arc, induction or electrolysis.

This sheet explains the principles and their assumptions. Educational simulation can simplify the process; an industrial model requires suitable data and validation.

04 · Your turn

Have you understood the essentials?

Only one correct answer per question. Answer all three questions, then view the answer key.

1. An induction oven heats mainly by

2. Do Hall–HĂ©roult and HĂ©roult arc furnace designate the same process?
3. The choice of an oven depends first
