01 · The scientific principle

What is happening?

The bench combines preparation and characterization operations: sieving, solid–liquid separation, chemical contacts and observations depending on the material chosen. Each result must be related to a sample and conditions.

A result only has meaning if its unit, its calculation base and its perimeter are known. A wet mass differs from a dry mass; a content differs from a recovery; a qualitative observation does not replace a titration.

02 · Relationships to know

The formulas, with their conditions.

Teneur massique = mconstituant / méchantillon

Masses in the same unit; ×100 for a percentage.

Use when: Specify dry or wet basis and nature of the constituent measured.

Passant cumulĂ© = 100 − refus cumulĂ©

Values in % of the reference mass.

Use when: Sieving with a sum of fractions compatible with the mass balance.

03 · From laboratory to industry

Where is this principle used?

Concentrator laboratory

Characterize a power supply and compare tests.

Process development laboratory

Maintain traceable conditions for interpreting results.

What to observe in the experiment

Choose a benchtop operation, note initial mass, masses of outputs and unit of result, then check the closure of the balance sheet.

This sheet explains the principles and their assumptions. Educational simulation can simplify the process; an industrial model requires suitable data and validation.

04 · Your turn

Have you understood the essentials?

Only one correct answer per question. Answer all three questions, then view the answer key.

1. A mass content is

2. Why specify dry or wet base?
3. If the cumulative refusal is 30%, the cumulative passer is worth
