Models, areas of application and references

This bench uses virtual test tubes. Metals, ceramics and polymers have assigned values for the exercise, specific to their condition and their method; they are not subject certificates. Mohs intervals and microhardnesses of minerals are accompanied by their source sheet. The catalog is a library of examples, which can be expanded.

Brinell: force in kgf, WC ball, measurement of two diameters; the model controls d/D between 0.24 and 0.60 and a thickness of at least eight times the depth. Vickers: force in kgf, diamond 136°, average of diagonals; minerals are limited to the charge of the reference. Rockwell: preload 10 kgf, total loads A 60 / B 100 / C 150 kgf, reading of e on return under preload; the pitch is 0.002 mm.

The positions are checked with conservative distances: Brinell six diameters between points and three at the edge; Vickers three diagonals between points and 2.5 at the edge; these rules do not reproduce all the variations of the standards. A test interrupted after contact leaves a trace. The springback of the diagrams is illustrative. Roughness, cracking, complete anisotropy, work hardening and real metrological calibration are not resolved.

Mohs: deposited powder is not a scratch. The comparison is ordinal; cross-tests monitor grain strength. The heterogeneous ore is not affected by an overall hardness. Shore A/D: reading under contact, maximum travel of 2.5 mm, minimum retained thickness of 6 mm and flat surface. The creep shown is indicative; scales A and D remain distinct.

Shore rebound: educational assembly distinct from A/D durometers. The drop is 250 mm; a block of the bench bouncing at 160 mm defines 100 HS units of the bench. The simulated height determines the restitution coefficient √(h/h₀). This montage does not purport to reproduce a specific HSc/HSd commercial model. Falling and bouncing are slowed down on screen. No universal conversion between the five families is calculated.

Understand: Measuring the hardness of a material

Distinguish between indentation, scratch and rebound tests.

Hardness describes resistance to local action according to a defined method. Brinell, Vickers and Rockwell use indentation, Mohs compares scratch, and some Shore methods rely on other mechanical responses.
