Grinding and mineral liberation

Link finesse, energy consumed and release of useful minerals.

01 · The scientific principle

What is happening?

Grinding continues the fragmentation of the ore, often in a ball or rod mill. In particular, it seeks to separate the grains of useful minerals from their matrix.

Increasing fineness generally increases the surface area created and can facilitate a reaction or separation. Excessive grinding, however, can consume too much energy and produce fines that are difficult to process.

02 · Relationships to know

The formulas, with their conditions.

E = 10 Wᔹ (1/√P₈₀ − 1/√F₈₀)

E and Wᔹ: kWh/t; F₈₀ and P₈₀: ”m.

Use when: Empirical Bond relation in its domain of application; Wᔹ depends on the ore and the test.

Énergie spĂ©cifique = puissance / dĂ©bit massique

Power: kW ; flow: t/h; result: kWh/t.

Use when: Average balance over a defined operating regime.

03 · From laboratory to industry

Where is this principle used?

Copper or gold concentrator

Prepare release before flotation or leaching.

Cement plant

Reduce the size of raw materials or clinker.

What to observe in the experiment

Compare moderate fineness and high fineness: interpret energy, flow and release objective together.

This sheet explains the principles and their assumptions. Educational simulation can simplify the process; an industrial model requires suitable data and validation.
