Pelton turbine

Link head height, flow rate and useful hydraulic power.

01 · The scientific principle

What is happening?

A Pelton turbine is an action turbine. One or more rapid jets strike the wheel buckets; pressure energy is converted into speed in the injector.

The efficiency compares the power obtained to the hydraulic power available. The best operating point depends on the type of impeller, speed and settings: maximum flow does not automatically ensure the best performance.

02 · Relationships to know

The formulas, with their conditions.

Ph = ρ g Q H

Ph: W; ρ: kg/m³; g: m/s²; Q: m³/s ; H: m of net fall.

Use when: Permanent regime; use the fall after hydraulic losses.

Putile = η ρ g Q H

η: dimensionless overall efficiency.

Use when: Define whether the useful power is mechanical or electrical, and use the corresponding efficiency.

03 · From laboratory to industry

Where is this principle used?

Hydroelectric power station

Rather high falls and lower flow rates: mountain hydroelectric development.

Turbomachinery industry

Sizing and controlling production groups.

What to observe in the experiment

Vary the jet and compare the effect of the flow rate with that of the drop height.

This sheet explains the principles and their assumptions. Educational simulation can simplify the process; an industrial model requires suitable data and validation.
