Driving log
Driving and experience recommended
1. Activate lubrication and cooling. 2. Start, then gradually open the intake manually, or activate the regulator. 3. Approach 600 rpm. 4. Connect the load bank between 90 and 110% of nominal speed. 5. Modify load, drop and intake; compare flow, speed, efficiency and power.
Then test a load rejection and observe the acceleration. Stopping controls the gradual closing of the admission; the wheel continues to rotate by inertia. Protection must be reset after returning to low speed. Automatic mode controls intake; the Kaplan blades and the Pelton deflector remain under operator control.
Model and technical references
Fictitious bench: Reference H 450 m, reference flow 0.8 m³/s, speed 600 rpm, diameter 1.38 m. These parameters and the protection thresholds are educational and do not describe any manufacturer model.
Available head Hₘ = gross head − pressure losses. The dike diagram varies with the set head, without calculating a reservoir drain. Hydraulic power: ρgQH net. Quadratic pipe losses, first order water inertia, limited inlet displacement, rotation equation J dω/dt = hydraulic torque − electric torque − friction. Pelton: torque by balance of momentum of the jet on the buckets; Kaplan and Francis: approximate torque–speed characteristic, reference efficiency and penalties excluding adaptation. The curves are not measured yield hills.
Alternator on isolated resistive bank: load torque proportional to speed, frequency proportional to speed, conversion efficiency 96%. This is not a coupling to a rigid network. The powers are therefore not imposed independently of the speed. The PI regulator adapts the admission to the setpoint.
For reaction turbines, σ available = (atmospheric height − vapor height − suction height) / net head. Simplified threshold: 0. Cavitation produces an alert; erosion and steam pockets are not calculated. The inertial pressure variation displayed is an estimate of the water column; water hammer waves are not resolved. The thermal model of the bearings is concentrated.
The rotation is visualized in slow motion to make the wheel readable; the instruments use the calculated physical speed.
