SOLID–LIQUID SEPARATION

Decantation and filtration of a pulp

Pulp + flocculant→→Underflow cover→→Cake

Decanter overflow → clarified water · filter filtrate → recovery tank. These two liquids are counted separately.

Filter phase

Hypotheses and sources

Fictitious batches, sedimentation kinetics and apparent filtration resistances, not calibrated. The decanter is initially pre-filled with water; this water is included in the balance sheet. Suspended solids, settled bed, buffer and filter are monitored separately. The underflow rate depends on the available stocks and the space in the buffer.

All three decanters have illustrative separation factors. The flocculant titration is monitored en masse but its small contribution is neglected in the pulp assessments; no carrier solution is added to the model. An overdose is not predicted. The turbidity displayed is an estimated concentration in mg/L, not an optical measurement in NTU.

Filter press: cyclic process. Drum, horizontal belt and discs: continuous vacuum filtration. Washing the filter press or belt adds water to the filtrate; no dissolved solutes are simulated, so no chemical washing efficiencies are claimed. Blowing removes liquid, without calculated evaporation.

The canvas, pressure or vacuum, ore permeability and relative speed influence the capacity and apparent humidity. Dimensions, capacities, humidity and phase duration are simulation hypotheses. Grains lost to overflow and filtrate remain included in the balance sheet. The remaining inventory is displayed until it is processed.

Understand: Separate a solid–liquid pulp

Compare gravity sedimentation and filtration under pressure difference.

In settling, the particles move under the effect of gravity and form a more concentrated zone. Flocculation can increase aggregate size, but excess flocculant does not necessarily improve separation.
